The cities overlooking the Mediterranean Sea enjoy a peaceful atmosphere. Therefore, even Syria can offer  high tourism. The two main tourist ports are Laodicea and Tartus. Laodicea is not far from the ruins of Ugarit, one of the oldest cities in the world, home to an important Phoenician kingdom, where the oldest examples of alphabetic writing were found. Tartus, however, with its marina is the favorite destination for the Syrian tourism, with beautiful beaches and famous seaside resorts: the island of Arwad, full of boats and restaurants, without cars; and the town of Safita, surrounded by olive groves and rose gardens that make it a fairytale landscape.
